ManifestAR @ ZERO1 Biennial 2012: Mark Skwarek

“The Bottomless Pit,” Mark Skwarek

The Bottomless Pit will connect San Jose and Lewisburg with a very large tunnel. People will be able to throw virtual objects, including products produced at these locations such as iPads and iPhones, into the the pit and participants in the opposite location will see the object fall out of the hole at the opposite location. Some of the objects may be magically transformed during their passage through the hole. The objects will begin to pile up on the opposite side they were throw from. I would like to add a third venue in conjunction with the Oasis Gallery in Beijing. The Beijing hole would be placed in a public space. A separate hole would be created connecting San Jose and Lewisburg to Beijing. I might  try to create another hole connecting workers at or near the real world Foxconn Plant to Apple in San Jose and Lewisburg although it may be difficult for Chinese workers to participate. This idea could be developed and someone on the ground in China could be found to help workers participate. I have worked with remote help in China for a show at the Sunshine Art Museum in Beijing, part of the Chinese Olympics. During the ZERO1 opening I would do performances at the pit.

Foxconn plant with safety nets already in place in China!

Apple Store in New York City, 2012.

Apple Store with safety nets, 2012.

This project was originally launched at EYEBEAM in Feb 2012. The project will transform apple stores and cooperate headquarters into Foxconn plants. The fact that Apple’s Silicon Valley campus may not be accessible will be addressed by the project.
